Gil Scott-Heron RIP

Just wanted to say feeling so sad about Gil Scott-Heron's death. I saw him, eventually, for the first and sadly now, last time at Brixton Acadamy last December. He was as wonderful as I'd always known he would be. I first got in to him when I heard "Johannesburg" in the early 70's. Started me on many years of activism when I found out what it was about and proceeded to spend time at the on-going vigil outside the South African embassy in Trafalgar Square. He was so much more than his activism or the "Godfather of Rap" label he acquired (and rejected). Wonderful smokey-blues voice coupled with intelligent, funny, heartbreaking, truthful lyrics wrapped in a beautiful combination of Soul, Blues and Jazz.
I wish I had the computing-fu to be able to up-load some tracks to share, but menopause-brain seems to have eaten any knowledge I might once have had in how to do that, (if anyone want's to enlighten me I'd love to share the joy that was GSH).
Check him out if you can, his last album "I'm new here" was my album of 2010 and he has an extensive back catalogue. He was important to music and to the world for many reasons. A great artist and a great man.

So I've been following rydra_wong's links for the past few weeks, reading and reading and getting angry and upset and feeling impotent and wanting to join in but not knowing what to say. Well I've just read kita0610's post and I've got to say "I'm not ok with this". I'm not ok with POC being marginalized, held back, ignored or patronized, either as writers/editors etc or in fandom.* I'm not ok with White writers/editors etc using their privilege to shut people out and shut people up. I'm not ok with a refusal to apologize or even to acknowledge that they were in the wrong. I'm not ok with a refusal to engage and learn. I'm going to quote directly from kita0610 now as I've run out of words

I am not okay with this.
It is not about 'both sides behaving badly'.
It is about racism. Full stop.
Everything else is window dressing.
Racism will not be tolerated in any community I am a part of.

Maybe "I'm not ok with this" can become a meme, a way for people to speak out who haven't felt they can before.

*Or any where else.

First post here in 2&1/2 years but sometimes shutting up and lurking's just not an option.

I've just spent a great day with my Mum, Brother and his 2 kids, Nicola & Chris and Chris's friend Neel. I don't get to see the kids often, they live with their mother and relations are strained (to put it mildly), so it's great to be able to spend some time with them.
cut for picsCollapse )

I've had a great day and just wanted to share the joy. :o)

You scored as Either. You brain is neither specifically male nor female in the way you perceive things. As bad as this sounds it can easily mean that you are capable of combining both gender aspects to your advantage. Rather than being genderless you are possibly able think freely. This does not mean that you are bisexual or androgynous or indecisive, but it might.

I quite like being either/neither, it could go a long way to explain why I'm so confused most of the time ;o)

Here's a fun bit of silliness to get me posting again.

• Bold all of the following TV shows which you've ever seen 3 or more episodes of in your lifetime.
• Bold and italicize a show if you're positive you've seen every episode of it.
• If you want, add up to 3 additional shows (keep the list in alphabetical order).

Read more...Collapse )

Wow, that's a lot of TV watching, but then I've been at it twice as long as scrollgirl ;o) I've added Alien Nation, Prey and VR5, all three up there in my favorite TV shows and all cancelled after one season boo, hiss. I sorta cheated with Veronica Mars,West Wing and Lost, I've seen all the eps that have been shown in the UK so far. I would also have seen all the eps of The 4400 & Jeremiah if only they'd show them here/release them on DVD (boo, hiss again)

What's your most hated or overused? Which one do you have a secret affection for? Which ones got missed? I didn't see miracle-grow Alien cuckoo baby (either "Savior" or "Great Evil")
Here's the link

Packing and Anxiety and AAARGH !!!!!!!!!

I've had the last 2 weeks off work to get started on the packing. Not got as much done as I'd hoped, partly because there's a lot of stuff that can only be packed away at the last momment and partly because I've run out of boxes, (also, I've been sleeping loads, like 10/11 hours at a time and am also the winner of the "worlds worst procrastinator award" for the 47th year running). I've also (again with the also) been getting these fun paralyzing anxiety attacks. Not the sweaty, palpitations kind but I just keep finding myself sitting or standing the same place for ages, not really knowing what I'm doing or where I'm going and trembling all over. Very weird. I'm taking some herbal tranqs to try and get it under control and they're not (thank goodness) totally debilitating, I just wish i could fast-forward my life to the middle of May.
On the plus side, I think I'm loosing weight, which I certainly need to do. Maybe I can make my fortune promoting the "Anxiety and Chocolate diet". I so hate moving and I think it's worse this time because I feel I'm being forced into it. I love my flat, I don't want to go but now I'm sitting here surrounded by boxes and empty shelves......aargh, Frell it! Maybe I'll have some alcohol :o)

From The Independent, March 16, reported by Johan Hari

One group of Afghan men have discovered a non-violent way to drive out occupying troops.... It's easy: try to shag the marines. Troops stationed around Bagram base have reportedly refused to serve and "fled in horror" after a tribe of gay Afghans kept hitting on them.
"It was hell", Corporal Paul Richard said. "Every village we went into to we got a group of men stroking our hair and cheeks and making kissing noises". He later commented, "Lots of guys turned tail and fled. It was hideous".
So, opponents of the occupation - enough with you conversions to jihadism. Convert to homosexuality and you'll be free, free, free.

It don't know if it's true, it reads like a Monty Python sketch, but it made me giggle :o)
